Catalog Description:

Development of English-language drama from the mid-20th to the early 21st centuries. Study of exemplary plays from Britain, Ireland, the USA, and Nigeria: Modern verse drama, social realism/kitchen sink, absurd theatre, in-yer-face theatre, and other trends and movements. Study of historical, theoretical, and dramaturgical background of contemporary drama.

Learning Outcomes:

By the conclusion of the course students will be able to:

1. Have a working knowledge of the predominant trends, genres as well as the main representatives of the contemporary British drama.

2. Draw connections between various works and trends, and their biographical, historical, and cultural contexts.

3. Assess their contribution to the European and American tradition of 20th century drama and how they remain relevant to the contemporary world.
