Chair's Message

I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of English Language and Literature. Our department stands as a testament to the power of language and literature in shaping minds, broadening perspectives, and fostering a deeper understanding of humanity and culture. As we embark on this academic journey together, I wish to highlight the exceptional program we have designed for our students, encompassing a diverse range of courses that will enrich their knowledge and inspire their intellectual growth.

Our Program

In the first year, our students will lay the foundation of their literary journey with courses such as “History of English Literature I & II” and “Literary Genres and Terms.” Moreover, "Advanced English for Academic Purposes" will equip them with the language skills necessary for scholarly excellence, and "Perspectives on Humanity" will foster empathy and understanding of human experiences. We strongly believe in the holistic development of our students, and thus, we have integrated practical experiences into our program. "Service Learning" will encourage students to give back to society, while "Digital Competence" will equip them with the essential skills to navigate the digital era.

As they progress into the upper years, students will have the opportunity to dive deeper into specialised fields of study, exploring “Cultural Studies,” “Introduction to Fiction,” "Mythology" and "Traditions in Drama." They will have the freedom to choose departmental electives that align with their interests, exploring subjects such as “Creative Writing,” "Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature,” “War and Violence in Literature,” “The Outsider in Literature,” "Gender Studies," "Gothic," and "Satire." These courses will empower our students to explore the fascinating realms of literature and its myriad influences on society.

In the final years of their academic journey, students will engage with canonical works of literature, including "19th-century English Novel," "Shakespeare I & II," and "Modern and Contemporary English Poetry." They will also have the freedom to choose from various departmental electives and a free elective, further customizing their learning experience to align with their passion and career goals.

Second Foreign Language

At the Department of English Language and Literature, we recognize the importance of linguistic diversity and global communication. To equip our students with valuable language skills, we have introduced four compulsory French courses as part of our curriculum. Our aim is to graduate students with a B1 level of proficiency in the French language, enabling them to engage confidently in French-speaking contexts. Additionally, we offer two Turkish courses specially designed for international students, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes cultural exchange and understanding. With these language offerings, we aim to produce graduates who are not only adept in English literature but also equipped with the language skills needed to thrive in a diverse and globalized society.

Extra-curricular Activities

At the Department of English Language and Literature, we take pride in offering a vibrant array of extra-curricular activities that complement our academic programs. Among these activities are the “Professional Development Seminar Series,” where we host distinguished English Literature graduates who share their career journeys and experiences, motivating our students to make informed decisions about their future paths. Another highlight is the “TEDU ELL Talks,” featuring seminars led by renowned academics, providing valuable insights into cutting-edge research and trends in the field. Lastly, we organize “Readers-Writers Meeting” creating meaningful interactions between our students and writers and artists, fostering a deeper appreciation for literature and the arts. These extracurricular activities are aimed to enrich the academic experience of our students and empower them to explore diverse perspectives and opportunities beyond the classroom.

Advisory Board and Voluntary Internship Programs

Our advisory board at the Department of English Language and Literature is a source of great pride and inspiration. Comprising accomplished English Literature graduates who have become respected figures in their fields, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise to guide our department's vision and goals. Their valuable insights and advice help shape our academic programs to stay relevant and responsive to the changing needs of the industry. Moreover, we offer voluntary internship opportunities for our students, providing them with hands-on experience in various professional settings. These internships allow our students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world scenarios, fostering personal growth and strengthening their connections within the broader literary community. With the support of our advisory board and access to rewarding internship opportunities, we aim to empower our students to excel in their chosen paths and make a meaningful impact on society.

As chair, I encourage our students to seize every opportunity to learn, grow, and engage with the world around them. Embrace the challenges and the pleasures that come with the study of language and literature. Embrace the diversity of thought, perspectives, and experiences that you will encounter during your time at TED University.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated faculty members for their unwavering commitment to excellence in education and research. I also extend my warmest appreciation to our students, for it is you who breathe life into this academic community and make it a vibrant place of intellectual exchange.

Together, let us create an inspiring and nurturing environment where ideas flourish, creativity soars, and lifelong connections are forged. Our pursuit of knowledge, language, and literature will undoubtedly shape us into compassionate, informed, and responsible global citizens.

I look forward to an exciting and rewarding academic year ahead.
